EXTRACT from a letter from the Hongkong Agency of the Peninsular and Oriental Company dated 28th November 1893.

"As will be seen by the annexed copy of a letter from

Captain Gadd, this vessel, as well as the 'Japan", encoun-

tered very severe weather on the voyage from Singapore which

occupied 24 hours longer than was anticipated when leaving

that Port. I understand that a considerable portion of

the Mail matter which is reported by Captain Gadd to have

been damaged is in such a state that there is much diffi-

culty in deciphering addresses &c., but the Hongkong Post

Office apparently accepts full responsibility for the occur-

rence,

which was due to the action of their Marine Sorter,

as no communication has been made to me upon the subject.
